Connect Codex or Claude Code

Add Vantage to your agent so it can request access and read approved transactions.

Before you begin

The Vantage MCP connector gives Codex or Claude Code tools to request permission and read transactions. Your agent starts the connector as a local stdio process and connects to https://vantage.ailuminare.ca.

  • A Vantage repository checkout, Node 22.13 or later and pnpm.
  • Codex or Claude Code installed.
sh
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
Run from the repository root to install the connector dependencies.

Choose Codex or Claude Code below. Replace /absolute/path/vantage with your checkout path and choose a private file for the agent’s credentials. Use separate files for different humans or agent installations.

Create your human account at https://vantage.ailuminare.ca, connect a bank account and use the hosted setup below.

Add Vantage to Codex

sh
codex mcp add vantage \
  --env VANTAGE_API_URL=https://vantage.ailuminare.ca \
  --env VANTAGE_AGENT_CONFIG=/absolute/private/path/codex-vantage-agent.json \
  -- node --import /absolute/path/vantage/node_modules/tsx/dist/loader.mjs /absolute/path/vantage/packages/interfaces/src/mcp.ts

Codex now has a connector named vantage. The absolute paths let it start from any working directory. On first registration, Vantage saves the installation key in VANTAGE_AGENT_CONFIG; later sessions reuse that file.

Add Vantage to Claude Code

sh
claude mcp add \
  --env VANTAGE_API_URL=https://vantage.ailuminare.ca \
  --env VANTAGE_AGENT_CONFIG=/absolute/private/path/claude-vantage-agent.json \
  --transport stdio vantage \
  -- node --import /absolute/path/vantage/node_modules/tsx/dist/loader.mjs /absolute/path/vantage/packages/interfaces/src/mcp.ts

Claude Code now has a connector named vantage. Keep the Node command after --. Registration saves the installation key in VANTAGE_AGENT_CONFIG. Separate Codex and Claude Code files give each installation independent permissions and history.

Request access

Ask your agent to register and request access:

text
Register my budgeting assistant with Vantage.
Request one hour to explain last week’s spending on my Amex card.
Give me the approval link and wait until I approve before reading.

Open the returned link, select your accounts and approve. Then ask your agent to continue. It checks current permissions before reading.

ToolUse it to
agent_registerRegister an installation, save its key and get an approval link.
agent_request_accessRequest access using an existing installation.
agent_request_statusCheck whether the human has reviewed the latest request.
agent_list_accountsList approved accounts and their grantIds.
agent_list_grantsCheck current grants and expiry.
agent_read_transactionsRead one page of transactions from an approved grant.

The connector uses agent mode by default, with tools for requesting access and reading approved transactions. Humans manage approvals and bank connections.

Advanced: human controls

You can add a separate human-mode connector to manage your accounts and permissions. It uses your human session to review requests, approve or deny access, revoke grants and manage bank data.

First, sign in with the human session file the connector will use:

sh
VANTAGE_API_URL=https://vantage.ailuminare.ca \
VANTAGE_HUMAN_CONFIG=/absolute/private/path/vantage-human.json \
pnpm --silent vantage human login --email human@example.test
Run from the repository root with your email. Login prompts for your password without displaying it.

Add vantage-human to Codex, using the same session file:

sh
codex mcp add vantage-human \
  --env VANTAGE_API_URL=https://vantage.ailuminare.ca \
  --env VANTAGE_MODE=human \
  --env VANTAGE_HUMAN_CONFIG=/absolute/private/path/vantage-human.json \
  -- node --import /absolute/path/vantage/node_modules/tsx/dist/loader.mjs /absolute/path/vantage/packages/interfaces/src/mcp.ts
Human-mode Codex configuration.

Or add it to Claude Code:

sh
claude mcp add \
  --env VANTAGE_API_URL=https://vantage.ailuminare.ca \
  --env VANTAGE_MODE=human \
  --env VANTAGE_HUMAN_CONFIG=/absolute/private/path/vantage-human.json \
  --transport stdio vantage-human \
  -- node --import /absolute/path/vantage/node_modules/tsx/dist/loader.mjs /absolute/path/vantage/packages/interfaces/src/mcp.ts
Human-mode Claude Code configuration.

Keep the human session file in your management connector and the agent installation key in the agent connector. Human-mode tools can change permissions and delete bank data, so review each management action before running it.

Local development

For a local Vantage stack, install Docker Engine with Compose v2 and GNU Make, configure Plaid credentials, then run make dev and make health from the repository root.

Use VANTAGE_API_URL=http://127.0.0.1:4000 in the connector commands above. Choose separate agent and human configuration files for local testing, then sign in or register against the local API.
